ICC Honours Cliff Cox & Jack Kyle
|
A recent press release from Canada Cricket states that amongst the six Canadians on the "honour list" of the International Cricket Council at the recently conducted Centenary Week in London, England, two of them are our very own, Cliff Cox and Jack Kyle, both of whom were awarded ICC Centenary Medals.
Quoting from the release:
"Clarke and Cox have both served the Cricket Canada for over 30 years in various capacities and have been instrumental in building the game at both the regional and national levels. They are both current members of the Cricket Canada executive and instrumental in the workings of the organization.
Edwards and Kyle are both past presidents of Cricket Canada. Edwards presided over Canada's 2001 World Cup qualification run and saw the team into the 2003 Cricket World Cup where Canada achieved its first and only win against a full member country. Kyle has been a stalwart of British Columbia Cricket for a half century and his work with junior cricket has been an unparalleled success."
The Metro Vancouver Cricket League conveys sincere thanks and appreciation to Cliff and Jack for the tremendous amount of service they have given to cricket and the honour they have brought to BC. Their contribution to the game over the years will not be forgotten and something which will not be easily surpassed.

Brothers provide interesting coincidence
|
|
The Kohli brothers, Money and Gagan, Vancouver Juniors CC, have had similar successes so far this season. Both have a top score of 63, Money against West Coast Tamils and Gagan against Arbutus. Both brothers have also taken a hat trick each, Gagan against Bengal Tigers and Money against Master Blasters. One can only imagine what would happen if both brothers played their best on the same day. They would make a welcome addition to most first division teams when called upon to do so.

Ivneet Bains - Master Blasters CC
|
Ivneet Bains, a junior player, came with his parents to Canada from Chandigargh in 2007 and immediately began playing cricket with Master Blasters CC. Under the watchful eye of his captain/manager, Anil Khanna, his cricketing skills have improved tremendously in a very short time. During this season he has been 'borrowed' by such clubs as Shaughnessy, Cloverdale and Fraser Valley and has consistently contributed in no small measure to their success. His scores include 130, 116 n.o. 84 and 55.
His talents are not limited to the cricket field alone. Amongst other achievements, he was recently honoured by the Indo-Canadian Business Association as the 'overall winner' from a group of 19 students; he has been awarded one of two TEAL scholarships for ESL students in BC who have excelled in academics and extra-curricular activities from the David C. Lam Foundation, and has also received a 2009 Millenium Excellence Award, Surrey Youth Recognition Award and the President'?s entrance scholarship from UBC where he will be furthering his studies this year.
Well done Ivneet. Best wishes for continued success.

Game at Burnaby Museum
|
The Metro Vancouver Cricket League was invited to send a group of players to play a game on the Burnaby Village Museum grounds on May 30, 2009, where sports within the community were being highlighted and promoted. The Master Blasters consisting of junior players represented the League. Visitors to the Museum enjoyed watching the juniors in action and appreciated their ability to explain the complexities of the game, following which some of them tried their hand at batting and bowling with fair success. Our youngsters were a happy bunch at the end of the day and enjoyed the hospitality of the Burnaby Village Museum staff which included lunch, rides on the carousel and tickets to the Museum

|
E-Mail message below has been received from Jim Richards [WVCC - President] & Alex Turko [WVCC - Secretary]:
West Vancouver Cricket Club would like to express our gratitude to all those in the cricket fraternity of British Columbia who have rallied around our Club, and who have given us their support in our efforts to preserve the premier field at Hugo Ray Park for the playing of our beloved game. Recent developments have moved in our favour. West Vancouver Municipality passed several resolutions on April 6, 2009. Related to the proposed Hugo Ray Park Artificial Turf Project, Council resolved to not proceed with the project . We trust that Cricket will continue to grow and develop at Hugo Ray Park for many years to come. Again, thank you all for your support.

Start of 2009 Season
|
The start of the 2009 season went according to plan and we go forward into our second year of cricket with confidence and commitment from our clubs.
Coloured clothing was introduced for players in the Premier Division. There was general agreement that the move was a positive one.
What was most impressive during Weeks 1 and 2 was the continuing camaraderie shown between teams. This augurs well for our League and we look forward to the continuance of such exemplary behaviour for the rest of the season.

In spite of the short notice given to clubs, twelve of them participated in the event, including new-comers Cloverdale and Fraser Valley, as also two junior teams. Perfect cricket weather was an added plus to make the day enjoyable for all in attendance. The tournament was preceded by a meeting of Club Captains at which new rules and other matters for the 2009 season were discussed. Tickets for the 2009 Awards Night/Dinner were also distributed.

Twenty20 Tournaments for 2009
|
The MVCL has secured a number of weekday permits from 5 p.m. onwards for the early part of the 2009 cricket season. As a result we are planning two Twenty20 Tournaments. We envisage the first one to start in April and games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursdays, running in parallel with and in addition to regular weekend games. We are currently accepting applications from clubs who wish to participate and will do so until May 3, 2009.
A second tournament is still being developed but will likely include evening, weekend and holiday Monday fixtures. More details will be available as the plan develops and more ground permits are secured.
Registration fee will be $600.00 per team
First 16 teams to register together with registration fee will be accepted
Each team is guaranteed at least 7 games
Same rules as last year
Clothing regulations will be the same as the 2008 Twenty20 competition. Coloured tops with white pants are permitted or all white attire. However, teams will not be allowed to mix and match. All players in a team must be similarly attired
Clubs with one team in the League can enter one team in the tournament; clubs with multiple teams in the League can enter one team in the tournament for every two teams in the League.
Stay tuned.

Message to Sri Lanka Cricketers
|
On behalf of all our members, and in particular those from Sri Lanka, we send regrets, and condolences in regards to the violence which has occurred to the Sri Lankan National Cricket team in Pakistan. There is no place in the world for such unspeakable actions - certainly not in the sporting world - and our hearts and prayers go out to the families of the players who have been injured in this tragedy. May they have the courage and fortitude to face the future.
Our thoughts and regrets are also with the families of the brave policemen who lost their lives in this mindless atrocity, while simply doing their jobs and making an honest living. [Message to C.E.O. Sri Lanka Cricket]

Plans for 2009
|
The MVCL is back for the 2009 cricket season bigger and better than ever Two teams have decided to leave the league and one club, Tsawwassen has folded. On the other side of the ledger a total of seven new teams have been added. New clubs include Fraser Valley and Cloverdale ; Surrey Hawks and West Coast Tamils have added a third and fourth team respectively.
A full slate of regular games are planned along with a Twenty20 tournament that, this year, will likely see games interspersed throughout the season. In addition we are also seeking a suitable venue for a Six-A-Side event.
We will conclude the season with another Awards Night Banquet building on the great success, goodwill and all around fun time enjoyed by all at last year's event.
Aside from a few minor tweaks and improvements to the Playing Rules there will be no major changes put forward to Club Delegates at the upcoming meeting on March 7th.
Also planned is a meeting of Club Captains on April 18th . Stay tuned to the web site for more updates and announcements as the season approaches.
